Buren was a joint commission for the Rijksmuseum and NRC Handelsblad in Amsterdam, as part of their on-going 'Document the Netherlands' series.
For the 200th anniversary of the Rijksmuseum a foreign photographer was commissioned from each of the Netherlands' neighbouring countries: I was joined by Eva Leitolf from Germany and Stefan van Fletteren from Belgium.
My work (Taming the Sea Monster and Other Stories) began with the Rijksmuseum's collection of 17th Century maritime paintings, especially those depicting sea battles between the Netherlands and England. I then revisited sites where the battles took place and where the ships were built, and looked at the contemporary use of the Dutch North Sea coastline as a place of mass tourism.
